Can contemporary art create its own mythologies?

This summer, Istanbul Concept Gallery presents HESPERIDES, an exhibition bringing together recent works by Su Alara Acerol and Deniz Defne Acerol.

Borrowing its title from the mythical garden believed in Greek mythology to lie at the western edge of the world, the exhibition brings together two artists whose practices unfold through fantastical creatures, imagined landscapes and distinctive narrative worlds, united by a shared metaphor.

Drawing on observation, research and imagination, Su Alara Acerol and Deniz Defne Acerol construct self-contained worlds through their characters, settings and narratives. Mythology offers a powerful key to reading these worlds.

Although nourished by shared interests, the two artists have developed distinct visual languages through their individual techniques and approaches to storytelling. Rather than emphasizing either their similarities or differences, HESPERIDES focuses on the unique qualities that become more visible when their works are experienced together.

In Greek mythology, the Hesperides inhabit a mysterious garden beyond the known world. Here, HESPERIDES becomes less a place to be rediscovered than a metaphor for the meeting of two imaginative narrative universes.
